Get your summer manicure
For nail art fans, summer is a fantastic time to enjoy a fresh colour palette, new styles and the introduction of bright new trends that reflect the joyful, holiday-themed spirit of the season. Whether you are an Essie, O.P.I, Chanel or Guerlain fan, there is something for everyone.
Key nail lacquer colours for summer
Juicy reds and ocean blues are very much in trend this season. Try the Guerlain Rouge d’Enfer, which is a classic red shade in a high tech formulation, designed to last for days without chipping.
The trend for slip dresses and ethereal fashions during the warmer seasons means that nude nails look polished, neat and beautifully neutral. One favourite is the O.P.I nude range in Infinite Shine 2 Half past nude shadow, for a chip-proof, high gloss finish.
Nail art looks stupendous when paired with hard wearing gel colours. Try Revlon’s Colorstay Gel Envy range of fabulously long-lasting gel colours, which don’t require professional application, but provide the same beautiful effects. Why not layer up shades, from the deepest of pinks, with sparkling effects painted onto the tips, and tiny crystal applications for a fabulously eye catching finish. You have the Pink, Pink Summer Collection Set with two shades of pink and a Diamond Top Coat.
Chanel in the meantime has 11 new shades of its Longwear formulation which is new for this year. Try the wonderful colour-popping Espadrilles, perhaps painted on two nails, with a contrasting hot pink for a Club Tropicana style finish.
Futuristic nail art
Essie in the meantime has fabulous tutorials and ideas for ritzy nail art featuring marine blue glitters, straight edged nail shapes, platinum gold and silver mixes, and beautiful tips, where Essie nudes are tipped with a deep plum finish at the top in a thin band, and finished off with a glitter coat. Mademoiselle is the perfect base shade.
Nail art becomes increasingly individualised this summer, and rich glitters are very much in vogue. Look for interesting matte, cracked, 3D and high lacquer finishes that allow you to create highly eye-catching looks, especially when combined with tiny nail transfers and accessories.
Length wise, the big nail brands are showcasing everything from ‘squoval’ short finishes – where the nail is kept neat, square and with gently rounded edges, to longer lengths where nail are uses tips. However, as a general rule, talons are out, and shorter lengths are still the most in vogue – looking contemporary, neat and very well groomed when combined with bright colours and creative finishes.
Care and preparation
Don’t forget to take plenty of care of your hands and nails with rich moisture creams, exfoliation, cuticle care and regular removal of old varnish to keep nails clean and bright. A base coat is an essential to help your polish last for longer and to protect the nail from any staining dark colours, and similarly, remember to apply a top coat to seal in your artwork and prevent it from chipping. All of the nail brands above offer hand and nail care preparation and care products, along with specialist formulations to help weaker, splitting or cracking nails, so that you can enjoy healthy, strong and extremely eye-catching show-stoppers!
