Hair care tips for summer
As summer descends upon us, our thoughts start to turn to barbeques, and time at the beach. We are all mostly conscious of using skin care, and solar protection products to look after our skin, especially when laying in the sun. But we may not be as conscious about the needs of our hair during this warmer and sunnier period of the year. Here are some ideas and tips which may help.
The increase in the temperature can cause an increase in the levels of perspiration and dust that becomes trapped on our scalps. This can lead to a range of hair and scalp conditions, like dandruff, which in turn can affect the hair. This increase in temperature can also lead to split ends and frizziness. Using a conditioner, like Revlon EQUAVE Instabt Beauty hydro nutritive detangling conditioner, can help to maintain the moisture within your hair as the heat rises.
Throughout the season, there is still the desire to have bouncy, shiny and hydrated hair. There are several tips that may help on a day by day basis:
- Instead of shampooing the life out of your hair, co-wash your hair, using conditioner only.
- Try using a dry shampoo, or in an emergency, shake some baby powder through your help to remove the excess oils.
- If swimming regularly, try a shampoo and conditioner, made for swimmers. It may also help to stop the green chlorine effect on blond hair.
- Ensure you avoid products with an alcohol or formaldehyde base. These products are very drying to your hair.
With the increase in the temperature, humidity, and the bright UV laden sunlight, our hair has to deal with a different range of issues. If we treat our hair the same during the summer, as at other times of the year, we will almost certainly be causing it some damage.
The harsh seasonal sunlight brings with it an increase in both UVA and UVB rays, varying levels of humidity, and the bright sunlight, as well as an increase in the temperature. All of these situations can create issues for our hair care routines.
UVA and UVB rays are both damaging to our skin; they are also able to cause our hair problems. These rays can dehydrate, and also damage the elasticity of the hair, leading to a loss of strength. The hair will feel rough, and will require more force when brushing. This may lead to greater breakages. Another effect from these rays is the fading of the hair color.
The best form of solar protection for the hair is a hat or a scarf. If neither of these options are suitable, the use of a hair care product with UV protection is advised. If at the beach, after applying sun screen to your body, rub your hands over your hair to lightly coat your hair with the sunscreen. Be sure to wash it out afterwards. To help preserve the color lustre of colored hair, during the harsher months of the year, using Shu Uemura – Color Lustre Collection, will boost the moisture and shine, and will provide color retention to your hair.
Humidity and hair don’t mix. As the humidity rises in the summer, hair starts to fall flat, becoming limp and lifeless, and developing that seemingly uncontrollable frizz. Living Proof – FRIZZ nourishing styling cream is able to help control the frizz by blocking the humidity, and providing a tame and shiny appearance to your hair.
For those times when your hair just needs to be pampered, to restore that lost moisture, and get back the lost life; you may want to try Kerastase – Nutritive range. It has been created to target dryness, leaving hair soft to the touch, and amazingly supple.
