Optimistic perfumes (I): Anti-depressant properties of the perfume components
In these times, we must find optimism everywhere. And how about enjoying a good fragrance?
Although the main function of smell is to warn us about hazards, odors can also positively affect our mood. And this is possible not only by the strong connection to our memories (the good memories that may be associated to the smell), but because there are certain components with intrinsic properties that affect us when we sniff them.
There are perfumes components that act like natural antidepressant, such as citrus or essential oils extracted from certain plants and flowers.
Properties of some perfumes components
BERGAMOT. Bergamot is a small citrus with a shape similar to a pear. Its flavor is sour and its aromatic skin is used to create oil. It grows mainly in Italy (Bergamo), but was used in the XVII century in Germany to create the first Eau de Cologne. Today it is one of the components used in the manufacture of perfumes and fragrances, as well as aromatherapy, for its high antidepressant-stimulanting effect.
YLANG YLANG. A flower that contains sedative and anti-stress properties. It is often mixed with fruity, floral and woody components (as in the case of Chanel Nº 5). It is also used in cosmetics for oily skin.
LAVENDER. Calming, antidepressant and even painkilling effects .Widely used not only in perfumes but also in cosmetics and toiletries: relaxing bath soaps, body lotions, toners and facial cosmetics … even sprays to help sleep like the pillow mist by L’Occitane, a brand that has managed to combine perfectly nature and research, through healing treatments obtained from plants.
JASMINE. Flower widely used in perfumery for its intense and unmistakable aroma. It has antidepressant, aphrodisiac and sedative effects, mainly used to combat anxiety as well as skin care.
MUSK. Brown, bitter, volatile substance drawn from an excretory gland near the genitals of a kind of deer native from Central Asia. Ancient oil used in aromatherapy to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety. Used in massage or as perfume to alleviate concerns. It raises the energic and state of mind levels, as well as the erotic.
