Taking Good Care for Beauty Products during Summer
Beauty products can be very sensitive that is why it helps to learn the best way to take care of them. It is fairly common for cosmetics to get damaged after only a short while of use. It can be frustrating when you spend money on the best brands of beauty care products and then watch as it all goes to waste just because you didn’t provide the necessary attention.
The technology used in products has evolved and varies on a very broad spectrum. There is also the matter of the ingredients that are combined in various beauty care products. All these contribute to different properties that call for specific storage requirements. Summer is, especially tricky when it comes to storing beauty products. Some products don’t do very well during this time of year, and you should know the right conservation techniques.
Avoiding Sun Exposure
The chemical composition of most products degrades when exposed to direct sunlight. Manufacturers do put products through the oven test before they release them, and this is usually to evaluate the stability of products. However, UV penetration is a different matter altogether, and it eats away at the preservatives in products. So, keeping your precious face moisturisers, creams and cleansers on your bathroom windowsill where light is abundant is out of the question. The alteration of the chemical structure will significantly reduce the potency of the products. You will keep using them without getting the expected results.
Some ingredients in beauty products are more susceptible to degradation from temperature fluctuations. Some of these include; DHA, Vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide and retinol. The lack of preservatives in organic products makes them easy to damage from temperatures changes. For such products, find a shelf in your bedroom or bathroom that is away from sun exposure. If you have a vanity with low-level drawers, that is even better. Ground storage will provide an excellent option when it’s too hot outside. Dark places offer a suitable atmosphere when temperatures are too high.
When the heat wave is too much, the fridge is another option you can consider. Most people already store nail polish in their refrigerators to keep it usable for a long time. The cold also prevents separation in polishes, thereby, retaining their quality for longer. You can do the same for creams and foundations as well. It would be a shame if your Shiseido or Clinique foundation turned two-tone because you left it too long in the sun. Keeping it in the fridge will prevent dissociation of ingredients in the products. However, make sure to return the products to room temperature once the weather stabilises. For someone who carries beauty products around all day, a cooler case will come handy. Ice cool cases for storing beauty products have insulation and an integrated coolant system to maintain low temperatures during storage. You can use it to carry products to work, the beach or on short trips.
One product that really hates summer heat is perfume. The oils and alcohol in the products don’t fair very well in light. Leaving your favourite Dolce and Gabbana fragrance out in the open will interfere with its composition. Evaporation is also a huge threat to consider. If you want to preserve that fine fragrance, then find a place that offers a nice shade. Refrigerating perfume sometimes may work, but the fluctuation in temperatures when you keep removing and returning it may have a negative effect. A cooler would provide better storage.
Besides storage, the way you use cosmetics will also contribute to their lifespan. For one, try as much as possible not to share products. Sometimes it happens; a workmate needs to touch up, and they forgot their concealer at home, so you lend yours. If you can help it, don’t share. The other usage problem is pumping the wand when using mascara. You want to get a second coating of mascara, so you pump the wand in the tube to load it. Doing that pumps more oxygen into the tube providing a ripe environment for bacterial growth. Dipping the wand slowly into the tube provides a better life for your mascara.
It is not uncommon to leave bottles and tubes open after using products. When oil comes into contact with oxygen, oxidation takes place. This process is how solutions suffer destruction. Always ensure that you put lids on beauty products to prevent such. Be especially careful to close lids for products that are in the bathroom because of the steam. There are also airborne contaminants that stick to the surface of viscous products, and that may cause skin reactions.
Best Before Dates
Besides storage, always ensure that you check the expiration dates on cosmetics. The labelling may vary from one brand to another, but you should know the shelf life after opening a product.
A lot of people keep their beauty products in the office because they spend most times there. In such instance, you may not have a lot of options when it comes to storage. You can find space on the ground under the desk for effective conservation of your skin and beauty products.
